сокр FOIAПринят в июле 1966, вступил в силу в 1967. Обязывает все федеральные ведомства обеспечивать свободный доступ граждан ко всей информации, которой они располагают, кроме материалов, имеющих отношение к национальной безопасности [national security], личным и финансовым документам и материалам правоохранительных органов. Спорные вопросы подлежат решению в судебном порядке. Информация должна быть предоставлена в десятидневный срок с момента запроса или апелляции, а споры должны разрешаться в течение 20 дней. Поправки к закону, усиливающие его, были приняты в Законе о неприкосновенности частной жизни 1974 [ Privacy Act of 1974]. В 1996 принята поправка о доступе к информации в электронной форме, известная как Поправки о свободе электронной информации [Electronic Freedom of Information Act Amendments] (EFOIA).
